Roanoke Virginia Wedding Planner Tips

Wedding Planning tips by Virginia Wedding Planner Elizabeth Sayre Stevens

As a friend of mine in the industry and I always say, “all brides are different”. Different in styles, interests, likes and dislikes. As a professional wedding planner with 22 years in the business, I’ve met all types of brides. Here are a few tips I firmly believe will benefit ANY bride when planning her BIG day.

1- Consider your guests. Yes, this is YOUR wedding. Your guests, in many cases, have taken time off work and made travel and lodging arrangements because they want to share this wonderful celebration with you. Keep them in mind when scheduling your day and don’t make them wait…start the ceremony on time (I swear it really IS possible) and don’t make them wait forever to see you after the ceremony. They are there to celebrate with YOU, not the DJ and caterer.
2- Don’t try to be Queen of DIY. You may be the most crafty person within a 100 mile radius and Martha Stewart wishes she had you on her staff, but when it comes to your wedding, if you try to do it all, you will drive yourself and EVERYONE around insane. The biggest thing you’ll look forward to on your big day is that it’s over! YES, make it personal and a reflection of you and your husband-to-be. You can do this by hiring and communicating with professionals in their respective fields. ENJOY your wedding, not dread it.
3- Hire Professionals. TRUST the professionals you’ve hired to do their jobs properly. If you don’t feel like they will come through without your constant attention, then you’ve hired the wrong people (and/or you need to let go).
4- Use a Professional Photographer with Wedding Experience. The photographer can make or break your wedding memories (and the ‘day of’ experience). Check out many websites and see if they capture the things YOU are looking for, like decor details you paid money to have professionally done, the dress you spent countless hours agonizing over and of course, the people shots of YOU and your wedding crew and guests. If possible, schedule a time to meet your preferred list of photographers before making a commitment. This person will be almost literally in your face the entire day, so making sure your personalities are a match is important. Don’t waste money on disposable cameras. Depending on guests to take photos that you can and will use is very iffy and a bit scary after a few frosty beverages (you know who I’m talking about…there’s always some funny guy in the crowd).
5- Hire a Professional Wedding Planner or at least a day-of coordinator. Of course, as a planner I say this. Regardless my position or who you hire, a professional planner/coordinator will enable you to LET GO and actually ENJOY your wedding day. We’re here to make sure everyone knows where to be and when; to handle any crisis that may arise with vendors or guests (and they do arise); to mediate with family when necessary (yes, it has been necessary more than a few times); and to simply make sure you and your family and guests have a FABULOUS and CAREFREE experience.

Enjoy your BIG DAY and Happy Wedding Planning!

Wedding Planning Tips To Get You Started

Congratulations! You’ve just gotten engaged…now what? Planning YOUR WEDDING DAY can be super exciting as well as extremely overwhelming. Just knowing where to start is tough. To follow are a few tips to help start you on your journey:

  • Determine the location. Have you always dreamed of an outdoor garden wedding or an opulent hotel setting? Did you and your fiance meet at college and the campus holds tons of memories for both you and most of your guests? Consider having a destination wedding to your alma mater. In general, college campuses offer great ceremony and reception venues at reasonable rates, particularly to alum.
  • Choose your colors. What time of year is it? What mood do you want to set? Vibrant and Lively or Soft and Subtle? Color will help set the mood and is something that will add consistency to your overall wedding, from invitations to reception linens.
  • Along the same lines of choosing your color palette, pick a theme and carry it from invitation to ceremony to reception. A theme can be a graphic design element or a feel like old world romance or modern sleek sophistication.
  • Above all, don’t feel constrained by tradition. Make your wedding day a representation of you and your groom…personalize it.

Congratulations and happy planning!

Wedding Planning Tip of the Day

  • TIP: “I’m on a budget and just can’t afford the extra expense of a bridal consultant.”
A good wedding planner or bridal consultant is not an additional cost to your overall budget. She can negotiate vendor discounts that aren’t available to you, saving you money in multiple areas. A wedding planner or bridal consultant helps you stay on budget, takes the stress out of negotiating with vendors, plus saves you money in valuable time saved researching every little detail.

Check back frequently for area vendor spotlights. We work with soooo many wonderful vendors that it’s difficult to label only one or two in each category as preferred.

Our first spotlight highlights those who capture the memories of your big day:

Consider putting a slightly higher percentage in your photography and videography budget. Poor quality photos or a boring video could potentially ruin your wonderful wedding memories.
